Warning: We strongly advise NOT to walk to Mount Kosciusko during snow season.

Detailed Itinerary
This road trip / like all, is a guide as to what you can do as a self-driving tour. Options include but are not limited to heading along the south coast towards Kiama exploring our Illawarra Coastline and Kiama Blowhole amongst other destinations. Extending your stay at any of the destinations is always recommended for a more immersive experience. Option to stay at Jindabyne or Thredbo, ensure you grab plenty of supplies at Jindabyne if staying at Thredbo. There’s several attractions to visit throughout the journey, do your research and get in touch if you have any questions.

Day 1 – Sydney to Canberra (280 KM)
Depart Sydney around 8:00 AM set your GPS for the township of Mittagong where you’ll find a local information centre with a wealth of knowledge regarding the region and good advice for your trip. We recommend exploring locally for a few hours visiting such areas like Mt Gibraltar, Berrima, Bowral and possibly Fitzroy Falls. Departing around 12:00 – 1:00 PM continue south bypassing Mossvale & Exeter. Make a stop at the Big Merino at the southern
Look to arrive into Canberra late afternoon.

Suggested Stops:

  • Mittagong / Bowral / Berrima / Goulburn
  • Mount Ainslie / Australian War Memorial / Old Parliament House / Parliament House

Day 2– Canberra to Jindabyne / Thredbo (180 KM)
Visit venues missed the day prior within Canberra traveling 120 Km south towards Cooma visit the Snowy Hydro Museum, Cooma Jail, Photo art Gallery & local township. The next leg takes you towards Jindabyne as you approach, you’ll enjoy magnificent views overlooking the lake before crossing Jindabyne Dam with a stop at Nuggets Crossing for supplies before heading to Thredbo. Stop at the Park Entry gates to pay for your National Park Fees, rangers regularly check vehicles.

Warning: This section of road can be overpopulated with Kangaroos especially if driving at night or early in the morning. We’ve encountered numerous sightings along this section of the Monaro highway and have possibly hit one or two. If you hit one hard enough you’ll be calling for a tow truck and your trip will probably be over. You’ll probably see evidence of accidents and of course Was-a-roos on the side of the road.

Suggested Stops

  • Cooma Township and Snowy Hydro Museum
  • Jindabyne Township
  • Nuggets Crossing For Supplies (do this before heading to Thredbo)

Accommodation Suggestions

Jindabyne has more options to stay with a few lakeside hotels which offer scenic walks nearby. There are many more restaurants locally than Thredbo. While Thredbo is our preferred place to stay the choices for eateries is limited and can be pricey. Make sure you stock up if staying at Thredbo.

Day 3 – Thredbo to the Summit
If you’ve ever wanted to hike to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko, today is your day. If your road trip is only 4 days, you won’t have optional days to do the hike in the event of bad weather. Take the Chairlift from Thredbo to Eagles Nest then hike to the highest Summit in Australia at 2228 Meters. The full hike is a 12 KM round trip which requires water and snacks to keep you energised for the walk. Be prepared and ask the local guides if in doubt. Grab a snack or hot chocolate from the Café at the top and enjoy the views overlooking Thredbo Village.

Suggestion: If you dare the cold waters of Thredbo River. Take a dip in warmer months, the fresh waters are refreshing.

Day 4 – Thredbo to Sydney
The short version of this road trip would mean that sadly it’s time to start your drive back to Sydney. It’s an approximate 6-hour journey including brief stops along the way.

Stay

  • Canberra – to break up the journey
  • Jindabyne or Thredbo – options to consider you wouldn’t stay at both.
  • Jindabyne has more facilities, Thredbo is more scenic

Hazards
Minimise night driving due to kangaroos on the highway, never drive if fatigued.

Excellent day touring the blue mountains. We saw the 3 sisters. Had many photos. Had a cider tasting stopped for little apple pies and saw spectacular views. David was fantastic and taught us a lot including the Australian slang. He had tremendous enthusiasm and worked around Road closures and our very specific goals to accomplish a great tour. Would definitely recommend going with David. Research ahead of time to see what interests you He even took us through feather dale personally. to see the kangaroos the wombats and even a crocodile Comfortable van also

It was my brother who found Dave's website. We wanted a flexible Blue Mountain tour that can accommodate us instantly as we don't have enough time left in Sydney. Luckily Dave answered our inquiry right away. Private flexi tour went well, he arrived on time in our hotel, friendly guy and instantly he started giving us trivia about the places we wanted to see, he also suggested some places to maximize our day and see as many as we can.

My family and I, did the private tour with David. We found it very entertaining, enjoyable and informative. David’s local knowledge of the area was invaluable and helped us beat the crowds along with seeing the best vantage points of the blue mountains. David was very pleasant to spend the day with. We highly recommend this private tour.

Having had to wait nearly 3 years (Covid!) to visit Sydney, this tour with David was well worth the wait. He took us to hidden away gems to see amazing sights with very little in the way of crowds. The tour is very flexible and was planned totally around what we wanted to get out of the day. We would highly recommend Escape Scenes and felt it was very good value for money.

We only had a day in Sydney and decided to book this private tour to the Blue Mountains. We are so glad that we did! David, our tour guide and owner of Escape Scenes was fantastic. He is super flexible depending upon what you want to see and what is important. He adjusts the itinerary to meet your goals. We were able to see everything that was important to us without the headache of a large tour group. We would highly recommend this tour!
