A Coast to Capital Experience
This private 2-day Canberra tour from Sydney is exclusive to your group — no strangers, no shared itinerary, no compromise. You travel in total privacy with your own experienced driver-guide across both days.
I’ve been operating private tours from Sydney to Canberra since 2009. The difference with this tour is simple — instead of squeezing the capital into a single exhausting day, you arrive relaxed on Day 1 and wake up in Canberra on Day 2 with nowhere to rush to.
The Itinerary
Day 1 — Sydney to Canberra via the South Coast
Every 2-day Canberra tour from Sydney begins on the Illawarra Coast. Our first stop is Bald Hill Lookout — one of the most dramatic coastal viewpoints in NSW, with the famous Sea Cliff Bridge curving out over the ocean far below. From there we continue to Kiama, where the Southern Ocean forces water through the famous blowhole with remarkable force, before climbing the rainforest escarpment of Macquarie Pass into the Southern Highlands.
Bowral is our lunch stop — a refined country town with excellent restaurants and boutique streets worth a proper wander. After lunch we continue south, arriving at Mount Ainslie in the late afternoon. From the summit the entire Griffin Plan reveals itself — the War Memorial, ANZAC Parade, and Parliament House aligned in a perfect geometric axis. It reframes everything you’ll see the following day.
Your Canberra accommodation is independently booked, with the evening entirely free to explore the capital’s restaurants at leisure.
Day 2 — Canberra, Unhurried
This is what separates this tour from every other Canberra experience available from Sydney. You wake up in the capital with a full day ahead and nowhere to rush to. We set out at 9:00 AM and you choose the experience — I’ll discuss your group’s interests and build the day around what matters most:
- Australian War Memorial — recently expanded, and one of the most moving experiences in the country
- Old Parliament House — the corridors of power where Australia’s federal government met for over 50 years
- Parliament House — the modern heart of the nation, with views from the grass roof walk
- National Gallery of Australia — home to Jackson Pollock’s Blue Poles and the world’s largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art
- National Museum of Australia — Australia’s social history on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin
- National Arboretum Canberra — 250 hectares overlooking the city, a quieter highlight most visitors never reach
Whether you want a deep dive into Australia’s political history, an afternoon in the galleries, or simply time to breathe in one of the world’s most beautifully planned cities — the schedule bends to your interests, not the other way around. We depart Canberra at approximately 3:00 PM, stopping in Goulburn for coffee before arriving back at your Sydney hotel around 6:30 PM.

Tailoring Your Experience This private 2-day Canberra tour from Sydney is shaped around your group across both days. Day 1 follows the Illawarra Coast through Bald Hill, Kiama, and the Southern Highlands before arriving in the capital — so by the time Day 2 begins, you are already settled, rested, and ready to explore without a long drive ahead of you. I will discuss your preferences before we head out and visit venues in the order that suits your group best.
My Recommendation Canberra’s national institutions are world-class and deserve time to be appreciated properly. To keep Day 2 relaxed rather than rushed, I recommend choosing a maximum of 3 to 4 venues and spending genuine time at each. The difference between this tour and a day trip is exactly that — you are not watching the clock. The final call is always yours.
Bald Hill Lookout
One of the most dramatic coastal viewpoints in NSW. From this clifftop vantage point the famous Sea Cliff Bridge curves out over the Illawarra coastline far below — a view that stops people mid-sentence.
Kiama Blowhole
One of Australia's most powerful natural blowholes, where the Southern Ocean forces seawater through a rock fissure with remarkable force. The surrounding headland and rock pools are worth a wander.
Bowral, NSW
The Southern Highlands' most refined town. Excellent restaurants, boutique streets, and a relaxed country atmosphere make Bowral the perfect lunch stop before continuing south to Canberra.
Mount Ainslie Lookout
Your first glimpse of the capital. The summit reveals the entire Griffin Plan — the War Memorial, ANZAC Parade, and Parliament House perfectly aligned below. It reframes everything you'll see on Day 2.
New Parliament House
The modern heart of the nation. Marvel at the architecture, visit the Senate, or take the lift to the grass roof walk.
Aust War Memorial
world-class tribute to Australia's military history. Explore the recently expanded galleries, the Hall of Memory, and the Commemorative Courtyard.

FAQs
How is the 2-day Canberra tour different from the day tour?
The private Canberra day tour from Sydney covers the return journey in a single day — approximately 12 hours door to door, with around 4.5 hours of exploration time in the capital. This 2-day Canberra tour is a fundamentally different experience. Day 1 travels the Illawarra Coast and Southern Highlands before arriving in Canberra in the late afternoon. Day 2 begins in the capital — rested, unhurried, with a full day ahead. No clock watching, no long drive looming over the afternoon.
Is 2 days enough time to see Canberra properly?
Yes — and it is the right amount of time to see it well. Canberra’s national institutions are world-class and free to enter, but attempting to cover them in a single afternoon leads to a sprint. With a full Day 2 in the capital, your group can visit 3 to 4 venues at a genuinely relaxed pace — spending real time at the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the National Gallery of Australia, and more — without feeling rushed.
What are the best things to see in Canberra over two days?
The standout experiences across a 2-day Canberra itinerary are Mount Ainslie on arrival for the Griffin Plan panorama, the Australian War Memorial, Old and New Parliament House, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia, and the National Arboretum. Every major venue is free to enter. I help you prioritise based on your group’s interests — whether that is politics, history, art, or simply the experience of being in one of the world’s most beautifully planned cities.
What is the route on Day 1?
Day 1 travels south from Sydney along the Illawarra Coast — pausing at Bald Hill Lookout for clifftop views, continuing to the Kiama Blowhole, climbing the rainforest escarpment of Macquarie Pass, and arriving in Bowral for lunch before the final run south to Canberra. It is one of the most scenic drives in NSW — coast, escarpment, and highlands — and a genuine experience in its own right rather than simply a means of getting to the capital.
Do I need to book my own accommodation in Canberra?
Yes — accommodation is not included in the tour price and is booked independently by your group. This keeps the tour price clean and gives you full flexibility over room type, location, and loyalty points. I recommend the Crowne Plaza Canberra or Novotel Canberra — both are well located, comfortable, and include breakfast options. Full details are provided at the time of booking.
How much does the private 2-day Canberra tour cost?
Pricing for the private 2-day Canberra tour is based on group size — from $2,550 for 2 passengers, $2,750 for 3 passengers, and $2,950 for a group of 4. There are no hidden costs. The price covers your private vehicle and experienced guide across both days, door-to-door Sydney hotel pickup and return, onboard Wi-Fi, and chilled bottled water. Accommodation, meals, and personal expenses are at your own cost.
Why is the maximum group size 4 passengers?
Overnight touring requires luggage for everyone — and comfort across two full days matters. A maximum of 4 passengers ensures the vehicle remains spacious and relaxed throughout, with ample room for overnight bags. If your group is larger, the private Canberra day tour accommodates up to 7 passengers.
Is the 2-day Canberra tour suitable for seniors or guests with limited mobility?
Yes. The 2-day Canberra tour is well-suited for seniors and guests with limited mobility. The vehicle is easy to board and exit, and Canberra’s national institutions are largely flat and fully accessible. The overnight format also removes the fatigue of a 12-hour day — guests arrive rested and depart at a comfortable pace. I discuss any specific requirements before departure and plan the itinerary accordingly.
