Australian Owner-Operated

I’m a proud Australian, and showing people this coastline is something I genuinely love doing. When you book a Grand Pacific Drive tour with Escape Scenes, you’re supporting a local, independent operator — not a large coach company. Every tour is guided by someone who knows this stretch of NSW intimately, from the clifftops above the Royal National Park all the way through to the rolling hills of the Southern Highlands.

Exclusive Private Tour

On your private Grand Pacific Drive tour, the day belongs entirely to your group. There are no other passengers, no rigid schedule, and no rushing back to a bus. I can adapt the itinerary as we go — lingering longer at a lookout, finding a quieter spot away from the crowds, or adjusting the pace to suit how your day unfolds.

I’ve been guiding private tours from Sydney since 2009, and this route remains one of my favourites. We travel in a 2023 Mercedes-Benz V-Class — comfortable, spacious, and well-suited to a full day on the road for couples or groups of up to seven passengers.

Spectacular Vistas: Coast to Country

This Grand Pacific Drive tour covers one of the most varied and visually rewarding loops accessible from Sydney in a single day. The journey south runs through the Royal National Park, one of the oldest national parks in the world, before opening out to the clifftop drama of Bald Hill Lookout — the elevated vantage point that gives you your first proper view of the Illawarra coastline stretching out below.

From there, the route drops down to the Sea Cliff Bridge, the suspended coastal road that curves out over the ocean along Lawrence Hargrave Drive. It’s the kind of structure that stops people mid-sentence. We follow the coast south through to Kiama, where the blowhole channels the raw energy of the Southern Ocean into something genuinely dramatic — timing and swell-dependent, but always worth the stop.

After the coast, we head inland to the village of Berry for lunch — a relaxed town with a strong food culture and a main street worth a proper wander. The afternoon takes us deeper into the hinterland through Kangaroo Valley, a pastoral river valley that most visitors to Sydney never find. The drive down through the escarpment and across the valley floor is one of the quieter highlights of the day.

We continue to Fitzroy Falls, where an 82-metre waterfall drops into the Morton National Park gorge below — the lookout platform puts you at eye level with the canopy on the far side, which is a perspective that takes a moment to process. The afternoon concludes in Bowral, the Southern Highlands’ most refined town, with boutique streets and excellent coffee. If time allows, the short drive up Mount Gibraltar delivers a panoramic finish over the Highlands before we head back to Sydney.

The Journey

Departing from your Sydney hotel or agreed meeting point, we head south along the Illawarra Coast on one of Australia’s most spectacular Grand Pacific Drive tours. The route then turns inland through spectacular mountain passes and river valleys before ascending into the Southern Highlands for the afternoon, returning to Sydney in the early evening.

Tailored Pacing & Flexibility

The freedom that comes with a private tour is something my guests consistently value most. While I provide a curated itinerary covering the South Coast’s best highlights, the day remains entirely in your hands. You decide how long you spend at each location — whether that’s an extra half hour at the Sea Cliff Bridge, a longer lunch in Berry, or a slower walk along the Kiama coastline.

I maintain clear communication throughout the day and adjust the plan based on how you’re travelling. You have complete control over which stops to prioritise — and which ones to skip. There’s no group to keep pace with and no driver watching the clock.

Please note: significant changes to the itinerary or additional stops on the day may affect the ability to visit all planned attractions within the tour duration. I’ll always let you know in advance if a change is likely to affect timing.

Explore Your Journey: From Coast to Highlands

Every stop on the Grand Pacific Drive and Southern Highlands tour is discussed with you before and during the day — including time requirements, walking distances, and terrain. Whether you prefer a gentle walk through Bowral’s boutique streets or a more active exploration of the Kiama coastline, I tailor the experience to your fitness level and interests. As a fully private tour, the final choice of which destinations to visit rests entirely with you.

Below are the key highlights that form the backbone of the day. These serve as your canvas — a starting point for a tour that will be shaped around your group.

It was my brother who found Dave's website. We wanted a flexible Blue Mountain tour that can accommodate us instantly as we don't have enough time left in Sydney. Luckily Dave answered our inquiry right away. Private flexi tour went well, he arrived on time in our hotel, friendly guy and instantly he started giving us trivia about the places we wanted to see, he also suggested some places to maximize our day and see as many as we can.

Having had to wait nearly 3 years (Covid!) to visit Sydney, this tour with David was well worth the wait. He took us to hidden away gems to see amazing sights with very little in the way of crowds. The tour is very flexible and was planned totally around what we wanted to get out of the day. We would highly recommend Escape Scenes and felt it was very good value for money.

We only had a day in Sydney and decided to book this private tour to the Blue Mountains. We are so glad that we did! David, our tour guide and owner of Escape Scenes was fantastic. He is super flexible depending upon what you want to see and what is important. He adjusts the itinerary to meet your goals. We were able to see everything that was important to us without the headache of a large tour group. We would highly recommend this tour!

FAQs

Yes — Escape Scenes operates a fully private guided Grand Pacific Drive tour departing from Sydney. As a private tour, the vehicle, itinerary, and pace are exclusively yours for the day. There are no shared passengers and no fixed group schedule.

How long does the Grand Pacific Drive tour from Sydney take?

The full day tour runs approximately 10 hours, departing Sydney at around 8:00 AM and returning by early evening. The route covers the Illawarra Coast south to Kiama, then inland through Kangaroo Valley and the Southern Highlands before returning to Sydney. The duration allows for relaxed stops at each destination without feeling rushed.

What are the must-see stops on the Grand Pacific Drive?

The key highlights on this tour are Bald Hill Lookout for the first clifftop view of the coast, the Sea Cliff Bridge along Lawrence Hargrave Drive, the Kiama Blowhole, the village of Berry for lunch, Kangaroo Valley, Fitzroy Falls in Morton National Park, and the Southern Highlands town of Bowral. Time permitting, Mount Gibraltar offers a panoramic finish over the Highlands before returning to Sydney.

What is the best time of year to do the Grand Pacific Drive tour?

The Grand Pacific Drive is a year-round tour. The coastline and highlands each have their own seasonal character — the Southern Highlands turns beautifully in autumn, the waterfalls run strongest in winter and spring, and the coastal sections are most dramatic in the cooler months when ocean swells are larger. Summer works well too, particularly for the Berry and Bowral sections. I’m happy to advise on conditions for your specific travel dates.

Is the Grand Pacific Drive tour suitable for families?

Yes. The tour works well for families — the vehicle accommodates up to seven passengers comfortably, and the itinerary includes a range of stops that suit different ages and interests. Bald Hill, the Sea Cliff Bridge, the Kiama Blowhole, and Kangaroo Valley all work well for children. I adjust the pace and stop selections based on the group travelling, and there’s no pressure to stick to a rigid schedule.

Where do you stop for lunch on the Grand Pacific Drive tour?

Lunch is in Berry, a well-regarded village on the South Coast known for its food scene and relaxed main street. Berry has a strong selection of cafes, bakeries, and restaurants to suit most tastes and dietary needs. The choice of venue is entirely yours — I can offer suggestions on the day based on what the group is after.

Can the Grand Pacific Drive itinerary be customised?

Yes — as a private tour, the itinerary is a starting point rather than a fixed schedule. If your group wants to spend more time at a particular stop, bypass one of the planned locations, or adjust the pace through the Southern Highlands, I can adapt on the day. I ask that any significant changes are discussed in advance where possible so I can plan the timing accordingly.

How much does a Grand Pacific Drive tour from Sydney cost?

Private Grand Pacific Drive tours are priced from $1,250, with pricing up to $1,550 depending on group size and any additional inclusions discussed at booking. The tour operates on a private basis — the price covers your entire group for the day, not per person. To confirm availability and discuss your group’s requirements, use the enquiry form or contact me directly.
